SoMa

SoMa

South of Market is a patchwork of warehouses, high-rise condos, and apartment buildings.

Welcome to SoMa

Formerly called “South of the Slot” in reference to the cable cars that ran up and down Market Street, South of Market is a patchwork of warehouses, nightlife, art spaces, high-rise condo and apartment buildings, and technology companies.

Attributes

Home to dozens of tech startups and multimedia companies, SoMa has a young, edgy vibe. Once an industrial area primarily zoned for commercial use, many of SoMa’s former warehouses and office spaces have been converted into luxury lofts, live-work spaces, and apartments.

What To Expect

SoMa appeals to young professionals who enjoy the neighborhood’s vibe and its convenient proximity to downtown. On SoMa’s smaller side streets, such as Minna, there are a number of Victorian flats and modern condos. SoMa is right next door to San Francisco’s downtown, and several major public transit routes pass directly through.

Lifestyle

During lunch hours, many SoMa tech workers grab a take out lunch and find a sunny spot on the grass at Yerba Buena Gardens. Some of the city’s best museums, such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, are close by.

The Market

Home to SF’s biggest development boom since the Gold Rush, SoMa will soon see massive new office, housing, and transit projects. Rincon Hill is home to huge new skyscrapers, including the Transbay Terminal, which will include a Caltrain connection. City plans for central and western SoMa will place another generation of offices and housing alongside the existing live-work lofts, warehouses, small factories, and art and entertainment venues.

Art & Culture

World-renowned museums, electric art galleries, live music venues, and thumping nightclubs make SoMa a cultural hub. Residents who want to take in an afternoon of cultural activities can walk to SF MoMa, the Yerba Buena Center, or the Jewish Contemporary Museum. Baseball enthusiasts head over to watch a San Francisco Giants ballgame, while others can walk a short distance down Market Street to enjoy a stroll along the waterfront and gorgeous views of the Bay Bridge, Alcatraz Island, and the East Bay.
