Russian Hill

Russian Hill

Criss-crossed by the iconic Hyde-Powell cable cars and home to Lombard Street’s crookedest section.

Welcome to Russian Hill

Highly coveted Russian Hill is known for beautiful historic homes and condo buildings, exquisite restaurants and boutiques, and breathtaking views. Criss-crossed by the iconic Hyde-Powell cable cars and home to Lombard Street’s crookedest section, Russian Hill is a favorite with tourists.

The Neighborhood

Boasting the highest altitude of any San Francisco neighborhood, Russian Hill offers breathtaking views of the city, East Bay, Alcatraz, Angel Island, and Marin County. One of San Francisco’s original “seven hills,” Russian Hill contains some of the city’s steepest streets, with stairs built into many sidewalks for better walkability.

Lifestyle

Despite its steep streets, Russian Hill is highly walkable, and many residents commute to work on foot. Nightlife can be pretty low-key, but Russian Hill offers numerous options for eating out, and several restaurants will probably be right down the block from where you live. The tennis courts at George Sterling Park and the pocket park, Ina Coolbrith Park, at Taylor and Vallejo are great places to take in spectacular views of the city and bay.

What To Expect

Russian Hill is difficult to access by car, due to its steep slopes, but whatever it lacks in terms of convenience, it makes up in cachet. Real estate in Russian Hill ranges from exquisite historic homes to luxury townhomes and condos. The neighborhood is well connected to downtown by Muni, as well as a cable car.

The Market

With little space left for new housing development, some projects are in the works for in-fill construction. While Russian Hill is densely populated, height limits on new buildings remain tightly regulated. One debate among neighbors is centered around whether formula retail stores should be permitted on the ground floor of new developments.

Art & Culture

Attractions new and old are scattered around the hill, including a top art school, a world-famous comedy club, and the verdant Macodray Lane, wooded enclave, recast by Armistead Maupin as Barbary Lane for his Tales of the City The San Francisco Art Institute provides community education courses, along with the fabulous vistas. Residents desiring outdoor exercise can simply head downhill to walk, run, or bicycle along Fort Mason and Marina Green.
